We played the NES version of Mario Bros. Game on the Wii U GamePad and realized we couldn’t do it very well.I don’t know what they found that was so bad. I don’t think anyone would complain if they simply slapped Wii U Game Pad functionality on older Virtual Console titles. But I think the main issue with this is that the Wii U goes into “Wii mode” when playing Wii softawre, thus it thinks it’s a Wii system itself. So that may ultimately be the reason why those virtual console games don’t work with the Wii U Game Pad, because they weren’t designed with it in mind. And when you think about it, sending a patch out to the hundreds of games on the Virtual Console service to allow Game Pad playback is a daunting task. Let’s hope that any new platforms Nintendo adds to the Virtual Console on Wii U (Saturn, Dreamcast, GameCube) have the required programming in place to allow off-TV play via the Game Pad.
Click to expand. The new controller's appeal is dying as we type. For many people Nintendo's old IP's are what brings them back. Heck the VC definitely sold a good amount of Wiis. I'm still looking forward to unreleased VC games.
Once I first saw the functionality of the Wii U gamepad, I wasn't excited to play New Super Mario Bros U off screen, I was excited to play Mega Man X, Super Metroid, Castlevania IV off screen. You take that away and you take away a good chunk of this system's appeal for me. There's people that want to live in the past, but combine their retro entertainment with future tech, I'm one of them. And for anybody else who is like that, Nintendo is now stabbing in the heart.
On one hand you have entitled gamers, on the other hand you have Nintendo engineers who seem totally incompetent. I think I am more on the entitled gamer side here. Figure it out and deliver me a great product. This isn't enhancing one SNES game to have online play, this is refactoring one data flow to allow the emulation of all VC games to be streamed to the gamepad screen.
This impacts every single Wii U owner, not just the fraction that downloaded the original F-Zero. Maybe, I don't know what the code looks like. Is it worth it?
Uh, yes, absolutely. Get your **** together Nintendo. This sounds like poor OS design to me. Click to expand. The new controller's appeal is dying as we type.

And whether Nintendo could've stream vc games onto the the controller will remain questionable. But it's not a deal breaker.
The controller primary use is to stream Wii-u games. And even all them won't have the feature to play on the controller alone because a lot will require the use of both tv and tablet screen.
As long as they use the controller to the best of it's abilities involving wii-u titles, I'm happy. That like me getting mad at the gamecube controller for not working on all wii titles. You win some, you lose some. At least you still have your good old pal television.
